How to schedule YouTube Shorts and videos

What counts as a Short, how YouTube scheduling works, and one video for three networks.

YouTube Shorts let a small shop reach people searching on the world's biggest video site with the same vertical clips it already makes for Reels and TikTok. If you schedule YouTube Shorts, they keep going out while you film the next batch. This guide explains what counts as a Short, how YouTube's own scheduling works, the settings YouTube asks for, and how to send one video to Shorts, Reels and TikTok from Karobar Social Content.

What counts as a Short

YouTube decides from the video itself. According to YouTube's help page on three-minute Shorts, for a standard channel a video is a Short when it is square or vertical and up to three minutes long, for uploads from 15 October 2024. Wider videos stay ordinary videos, whatever their length.

In practice: film upright, keep it under three minutes, and it will be treated as a Short.

How YouTube's own scheduling works

In YouTube Studio or the YouTube app you can schedule a video's publish time:

  • Upload the video and fill in the details, then set it as Scheduled or Private.
  • Choose the Schedule option and pick a date, time and time zone.
  • To change the time later, keep the video private and pick a new time.
  • The date shown on the watch page follows Pacific time, so it can differ from the date you chose if you are ahead of it.
  • If your channel has a Community Guidelines strike, a scheduled video does not go public during the penalty; you reschedule it afterwards.

One vertical video, three places

Most shops film one vertical clip and post it to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok. Doing that in three apps means three uploads and three captions. In Karobar it is one post:

  1. Connect your YouTube channel in Settings → Channels. See Connect your YouTube channel.
  2. Open Social Content, click New post, and tick your YouTube channel, Instagram account and TikTok profile.
  3. Add the video. Under Post as, choose Short for YouTube, Reel for Instagram and Video for TikTok.
  4. Write one caption, or switch a network to its own version. On YouTube the caption becomes the description.
  5. Fill in the YouTube details below, pick a time and press Schedule.

Want them a little apart? Use Space out accounts to put minutes between each network. Every composer option is in Create and schedule a social media post.

Category, language, licence, embeddingSet once and they stay sensible for most shop videos.

What makes a good Short for a shop

  • Answer a search. "How to tie a hijab in a minute", "which charger for this phone": Shorts can be found through YouTube search for months.
  • Show the product in the first two seconds. Viewers swipe away fast.
  • Before and after. A clean result, a fitted outfit, a repaired item.
  • A series. Three Shorts on the same theme, scheduled a few days apart, give people a reason to subscribe.
  • Text on screen. Many people watch without sound.

Longer videos, such as a full product review, can go out from the same composer as Video instead of Short, with the same details.

After the Short goes out

  • Comments in one inbox. Comments on your videos arrive in the Karobar Comments inbox. YouTube has no direct messages, so comments are where questions come in. A routine for busy days is in How to moderate social media comments.
  • Channel numbers. Business Insights shows subscribers, views and video results, with views by country.
  • Reuse what worked. In the Content tab, open a Short that did well and choose Reuse in new post to start a follow-up.

Plan Shorts as a series

Single Shorts come and go. A series gives viewers a reason to come back and to subscribe. Pick a format you can repeat every week with the products you have:

Series ideaExample episode
One product, three waysOne scarf styled for work, a wedding and the weekend.
Customer question of the week"Will this charger work with my phone?" answered in 30 seconds.
Behind the orderFrom the message to the packed parcel.
Before and afterA stain removed, a phone screen replaced, a room made over.

Film four episodes at once and schedule them a few days apart. Use the same opening shot and a matching title pattern, such as "Styled 3 ways: the black abaya", so viewers recognise the series in search results and suggestions.

Mistakes to avoid

  • A landscape clip. A 16:9 video is not a Short, however short it is.
  • The TikTok watermark. Upload the original file, not a video downloaded from TikTok with its logo on it.
  • An empty title. The title is how YouTube search finds you. Write it for the person searching.
  • Skipping the kids question. YouTube will not publish without it; answer it once and check it on each post.
