Why reply in public at all
A public reply is read by everyone who scrolls past, not just the person who asked. Answering "price?" in the comments saves you the same question twenty more times, and a calm reply to a complaint shows every future buyer how you treat customers.
Rules for good comment replies
- Reply within the first hour if you can; that is when most comments arrive.
- Keep it short. A comment reply is a sentence, not a message.
- Move details, prices for many items, addresses and complaints to a DM.
- Rotate a few versions of the same reply so the comments do not look automated.
- Never argue in public. Reply once, offer a private chat, and stop.
- Do not reply to spam; hide or delete it instead.
Let automation handle the repeats
On Facebook and Instagram, a comment automation can send a DM to anyone who comments a word like PRICE and post one of several public replies for you. See Facebook comment auto reply and Instagram comment to DM. For spam and abuse, see How to hide comments on Instagram.
