# Instagram comment to DM: how to turn "price?" comments into sales

Answer buyers who comment with a private message, a link and a follow-up, while keeping prices out of public view.

Updated 3 October 2026 · 7 min read

You post a new product and the comments start: "price?", "how much", "available in red?", "details pls". Each one is a buyer raising a hand. If you answer in public, competitors see your price and the buyer still has no next step. If you answer late, the buyer has moved on to the next shop in their feed. If you do not answer at all, the comment just sits there.

Comment to DM fixes this by answering the comment privately, in the buyer's inbox, within moments of the comment. This guide explains why private answers work, the rule Meta sets for them, how to set up an automation step by step, which keywords to use, how to write the first message, and how to tell if it is working. The examples use [Karobar](https://karobar.io/features/comment-auto-dm), but the ideas apply to any tool that uses Meta's private replies.

## Why answer "price?" comments in a DM

A comment asking for the price is the start of a sale, not the end of one. Moving it into a DM helps in three ways:

- **The buyer gets a next step.** A DM can carry a link to the product page, a size chart or an order form. A public reply can only say a number.
- **Your pricing stays between you and the buyer.** You can still post prices openly if you want to, but you choose. Nobody is forced to read a price war in your comments.
- **The conversation keeps going.** Once the buyer replies in the DM, you can ask for their size, colour and address in the same thread, which is where the order gets made. See [taking orders from Instagram DMs](https://karobar.io/guides/take-orders-from-instagram-dms) for that part.

Speed matters too. People asking "price?" often ask several shops at once. An answer that lands while they are still scrolling has a real chance. One that lands the next morning usually does not.

## The rule Meta sets: one private reply per comment

Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, lets a business send a **private reply** to someone who commented on its post. The rule is strict: you get **one private reply per comment**. You cannot send a second message off the same comment, and you cannot message people who never commented or wrote to you.

That one message matters, because it is the door to the conversation. When the person taps a button in it or writes back, the conversation opens and you can keep talking in the normal DM thread. So the job of the first message is not to close the sale. Its job is to get one tap or one reply.

What this means in practice

Keep the first private reply short and give it one clear action. Put the product links and details in the message that follows the tap, not in the first one.

## How comment to DM works in Karobar

Karobar's comment to DM runs on **Facebook and Instagram** only, because it relies on Meta's private reply. Each automation has a trigger, the messages you send, and a few optional extras.

**Triggers.** An automation can start when someone:

- comments anything on your chosen posts, or on all your posts
- comments a keyword, such as "price"
- sends you a DM with a keyword
- mentions you in their story
- replies to your story

Keywords can match in three ways: the comment **contains** the word, **exactly matches** it, or **starts with** it. You can also describe the trigger in plain words, such as "asking about the price or cost", and Karobar matches comments by their meaning, so "kitna ka hai" or "how much for this" can still count.

**Messages.** The opening DM is a short message with one button. When the buyer taps it, Karobar sends your second DM with your link buttons, for example to the product page. If you leave out the opening DM, the link DM goes straight away. You can add a **follow-up** after 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours or 12 hours. It only goes out if the buyer has not opened your link and has not replied. You can also add up to **three public replies**, such as "Sent you a DM!", which Karobar rotates so your comments do not show the same line every time.

**Limits that protect you and your buyers:**

- Only one automation acts on a comment, so a buyer never gets two DMs from one comment.
- The same person gets at most one DM per automation in 24 hours, however many times they comment.
- Only top-level comments start an automation. Replies inside a comment thread do not, and neither do comments from your own page.

Every message in an automation is **your own text**. Karobar AI never writes automation messages. Comments that match no automation are not lost: they appear in the [comments inbox](https://karobar.io/features/comments-engagement), where Karobar AI can draft a reply that a person reads and approves before it is posted.

## Set up your first automation, step by step

Start with one post and one keyword. Once it works, widen it.

1. **Connect your account.** Your Instagram account needs to be a professional account (business or creator). Connect it, or your Facebook Page, from the channels settings. See [Karobar for Instagram](https://karobar.io/platforms/instagram).
2. **Create an automation** and pick the trigger. For a product post, choose "keyword in a comment" and select that post.
3. **Add your keywords.** Use the words your buyers actually type. Choose "contains" for most of them, so "price?" and "price plz" both match.
4. **Write the opening DM** with one button, such as "Send me the price".
5. **Write the link DM** that goes out after the tap, with link buttons to the product page or order form.
6. **Add a public reply** or two, so other people under the post see that you answered.
7. **Choose a follow-up** if you want one, for example after 3 hours.
8. **Test it** from a second account: comment the keyword, check the DM, tap the button and open the link.
9. **Turn it on** and watch the first few comments come through.

## Keyword ideas that match how buyers comment

Buyers rarely type the word you expect. Collect the words from your own past comments and group them by what the buyer wants.

| What the buyer wants | Keywords to try | Match type |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The price | price, how much, kitna, rate, cost | Contains |
| Details or a link | details, info, link, dm | Contains |
| A size or colour | size, colour, color, available | Contains |
| A campaign word you asked for | SALE, WANT, GIFT | Exact match |
| Anything at all on a launch post | Any comment on this post | No keyword |

A campaign word works well in a caption: "Comment WANT and we will DM you the link." It tells buyers exactly what to do, and an exact match keeps the automation from firing on unrelated comments. If buyers write in several languages, use a trigger described by meaning instead of listing every spelling.

## Write an opening DM people tap

The opening DM has one job: get the tap. A few habits help:

- **Say who you are and why you are writing.** "Hi! Thanks for asking about the black kurta on our post."
- **Keep it to two short lines.** People read it in a notification preview.
- **Make the button say what they get.** "Show me the price" beats "Click here".
- **Put the details after the tap.** The second DM can hold the price, sizes and link buttons to the product page.
- **Write the follow-up as a gentle nudge,** not a repeat. "Still thinking? The medium size is going fast" is fine if it is true.

Once the buyer replies, answer them yourself or with help from [AI reply drafts](https://karobar.io/features/ai-reply-drafts) in the inbox. Drafts are written from your product list and business details, and a person reads each one before it is sent.

## Mistakes to avoid

- **Keywords that are too short.** A "contains" match on "hi" or "ok" fires on almost every comment. Use whole words with a clear meaning.
- **Two automations fighting over one post.** Only one automation acts on each comment, so overlapping keywords on the same post make the result hard to predict. Give each post one clear automation.
- **Expecting replies inside threads to trigger.** Only top-level comments start an automation. Ask buyers to comment on the post itself.
- **Putting everything in the first message.** You only get one private reply per comment. Spend it on the tap, not on a wall of text.
- **Broken or slow links.** Open every link yourself before you turn the automation on.
- **A public reply that gives the price anyway.** If the point is to move the conversation into DMs, keep the public reply to "Sent you a DM!".

## Measure what it brings in

Karobar tracks the clicks on the links in your automation DMs, so you can see which posts and which messages get buyers to the product page. Compare automations side by side: if one post gets many comments but few clicks, rewrite its opening DM or its button text and check again after a few days.

Then follow the buyer to the order. When a DM turns into a sale, record it from the chat in [Sales Desk](https://karobar.io/features/sales-desk), so each order keeps a link back to the conversation it came from.

FAQ

## Questions? Answers.

Any other questions? [Ask support](https://karobar.io/support).

### Does comment to DM work on TikTok or YouTube?

Not in Karobar. Comment to DM uses Meta's private reply, so it works on Instagram and Facebook only. Comments from TikTok and YouTube still arrive in the comments inbox, where you can reply by hand or approve an AI draft.

### Can I send more than one DM to someone who commented?

Meta allows one private reply per comment. After the person taps the button or replies, the conversation is open and you can keep talking. Karobar also sends the same person at most one DM per automation in 24 hours.

### Does Karobar AI write the automation messages?

No. Every opening DM, link DM, follow-up and public reply is text you write. Karobar AI only drafts replies for comments and chats that a person reads and approves.

### When does the follow-up message go out?

After the delay you choose: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours or 12 hours. It only goes out if the buyer has not opened your link and has not replied.

### What happens to comments that match no keyword?

They stay in the comments inbox like any other comment. You can reply, send a private reply yourself, or approve a reply drafted by Karobar AI.
