# How the TikTok algorithm works, according to TikTok

What TikTok says its For You feed looks at, and what that means for shop videos.

Updated 15 October 2026 · 4 min read

Every seller on TikTok has seen it: one video gets a few hundred views, the next gets fifty thousand. It feels random, but TikTok has explained how its For You feed chooses videos. This guide sums up what TikTok itself says about the TikTok algorithm, separates it from the myths, and turns it into a simple checklist for shop videos you can plan in [Karobar Social Content](https://karobar.io/features/social-content).

## What TikTok says the For You feed looks at

In its explainer [How TikTok recommends content](https://newsroom.tiktok.com/how-tik-tok-recommends-video-for-you?lang=en-MY), TikTok lists three groups of signals:

| Signal | Examples | How much it counts |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How people interact | Videos they like, share or comment on, accounts they follow, content they create | The most |
| Information about the video | Captions, sounds and hashtags | Helps match the video to interested people |
| Device and account settings | Language, country, type of device | Less, because people do not choose these as preferences |

Strong signals count more than weak ones. TikTok's own example: whether someone watches a longer video all the way to the end counts for more than whether the viewer and the creator are in the same country.

## Three myths, and what TikTok actually says

- **"You need lots of followers."** TikTok says neither follower count nor past high-performing videos are direct factors. A new account can reach many people with one good video.
- **"Post the same video again to get another chance."** TikTok says it does not recommend duplicate content, content people have already seen, or spam.
- **"Your feed only shows what you like."** TikTok deliberately mixes in different content, and generally avoids two videos in a row with the same sound or creator.

## Videos that may not be recommended at all

TikTok also explains that some videos may not be eligible for the For You feed:

- Videos that were just uploaded or are still being reviewed.
- Spam, including content meant to boost traffic artificially.
- Some reviewed content, such as legal sales of regulated goods, which may not be shown to general audiences.

If you sell products in a regulated category, expect lower reach from the For You feed and lean more on your followers, ads and other networks.

## What this means for a shop video

1. **Earn the full watch.** Keep videos as long as they need to be and no longer. Cut slow starts, pauses and repeated shots.
2. **Show the product in the first second.** People decide fast; a logo intro loses them.
3. **Give a reason to comment.** Ask a simple question: "Which colour should we restock?" Comments are interactions, and buyers often ask the price there.
4. **Make it easy to share.** Useful tips, before and after, and "send this to a friend who needs it" content travels.
5. **Describe it well.** A clear caption, a few relevant hashtags and a fitting sound help TikTok find the right viewers.
6. **Make new videos, not copies.** Film a new angle on a winning idea instead of reposting it.

## A checklist before you post

1. Does the product appear in the first second, without a logo intro?
2. Is there any part where nothing happens? Cut it.
3. Is the video vertical and sharp, with your own original footage?
4. Does the caption say what it is, in the words buyers search for?
5. Are there two or three relevant hashtags, not twenty?
6. Is there a reason to comment, such as a question or a choice?
7. Is the promotional content label on, if it promotes your products?
8. Is someone ready to answer comments in the first hour?

Eight quick questions, and most videos that disappoint fail one of them.

Keep the list next to you when you film, not only when you upload. Most fixes, such as a stronger opening shot, are much easier to get right on the day than in editing.

## About "going viral"

There is no switch for going viral. What TikTok describes is simpler: each video is shown to people likely to enjoy it, and how they react decides whether it is shown to more. A video that people finish, share and comment on keeps travelling, sometimes for days.

For a shop, a viral video is only half the job. The other half is being ready when it happens: stock, quick answers to comments and DMs, and a way to take orders from chat. See [How to sell on TikTok as a small business](https://karobar.io/guides/sell-on-tiktok-small-business).

## A weekly routine that works with the algorithm

1. Film four or five videos in one session, each with a strong first second.
2. Schedule them across the week, and keep one slot free for a trend.
3. Answer comments in the first hour after each post; questions are buyers.
4. At the end of the week, compare views and engagements in the Content tab, and film more of what people watched to the end.

Scheduling is covered in [How to schedule TikTok posts](https://karobar.io/guides/schedule-tiktok-posts), and timing in [The best time to post on TikTok](https://karobar.io/guides/best-time-to-post-on-tiktok).

## Mistakes to avoid

- **Buying views or followers.** Artificial traffic counts as spam and can stop videos being recommended.
- **Deleting and reposting.** Duplicates are not recommended; improve the idea instead.
- **Chasing every trend.** A trend that does not fit your product brings views but no buyers.
- **Ignoring the comments.** Interaction is what the feed listens to, and it is where sales start.

FAQ

## Questions? Answers.

Any other questions? [Ask support](https://karobar.io/support).

### Does follower count matter on TikTok?

Not directly. TikTok says neither follower count nor past high-performing videos are direct factors in its recommendations.

### What is the strongest signal for the TikTok algorithm?

TikTok gives the example of someone watching a longer video to the end as a strong signal, much stronger than location.

### Why are my videos not getting views?

Common reasons are weak first seconds, people not finishing the video, reposted duplicates, or a product category TikTok limits in the For You feed.

### Do hashtags still matter?

They are part of the video information TikTok uses, along with captions and sounds. A few relevant ones help more than many generic ones.

### Does deleting a video hurt my account?

TikTok does not list past performance as a direct factor. Deleting is rarely useful, though: a slow video can still pick up later, and reposting it as a duplicate will not be recommended.
